Jail Release Process in Austin, Travis County

I have a friend or loved one in Jail, or I have a warrant for my arrest. What should I do?

What are my options for Jail Release or to Clear an Arrest Warrant from Austin or Travis County?

Jail Release is a process by which an Attorney or Lawyer can get you out of jail, rather than using a Bail Bond Company. The process requires a Travis County Attorney to talk with the Judge and work to release the person from jail. The process is not fast, and may still take several hours.

The process is different if the person has an active warrant but has not turned themselves in yet. If you have an active warrant for your arrest, officers or court personnel can take you into custody at any time. Depending on the circumstances, the longer a warrant is active; the less chance a judge will allow you to remain out of custody if you turn yourself in.

Travis County allows what is known as a Walkthrough, where you meet with an attorney to pre-qualify for a personal release bond or a bond in the amount of your bail. Then, your attorney will accompany you to the surrender desk (in the Courthouse) where you surrender to the booking process.

It's important to note that on most Walkthroughs, you do not enter the jail, and instead remain in the Courthouse.

After a short period of time, usually between 30 minutes and two hours, you are released on your posted bond. The staff will give you bond paperwork as well as your arraignment / initial court appearance date.
