About Robert Keates

Robert Keates has been a criminal defense attorney from the beginning of his legal career, focusing on defending clients against criminal charges. He has tried both felony and misdemeanor jury trials and he has appeared in over a thousand criminal court proceedings.

He has successfully defended clients in all types of serious criminal matters. A hallmark of Mr. Keates's practice is the belief that a client is entitled to be informed of everything that is happening with respect to the client’s case.

Mr. Keates works closely with each client to promote open communication, empowering Clients with the knowledge and information to effectively assist in the representation of the case. Robert Keates received his legal J.D. degree from Hofstra University School of Law. After graduating with concentrations in both Criminal Law and Constitutional Law, he obtained his LL.M. Masters of Law Degree in Criminal Law from California Western School of Law, one of only two Universities at the time in the United States that offered such a program.

Mr. Keates has clerked for a Federal Judge in the 5th Circuit (Texas, Lousiana), as well as worked for the California Innocence Project. He has argued motions and prepared cases with the Federal Defenders of San Diego, and was employed nearly six years with the Orange County Public Defender's Office. At that office, Lawyer Keates was immediately assigned to jury trials and advanced quickly to handle a large caseload of serious felony and misdemeanor jury trials for both adults and juveniles. In 2008, Mr. Keates was awarded the Don Simms Award for 'Attorney of the Year' within the Public Defender's Office. He was also the recipient of several "Litigator of the Month" awards for Trial work while representing Juveniles.

Robert Keates has tried both felony and misdemeanor jury trials and he has appeared in thousands of criminal court proceedings and over 50 trials.
